Huw Thomas

Huw has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Urban Estate Management from the former Polytechnic of Wales (now known as the University of Glamorgan).  Is a Fellow of The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.   A Fellow of the Association of Building Engineers.   

 

Also a member of the following Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Faculties:-

 

  1. Building Surveying Faculty.

  2. Residential Property Faculty.

  3. Dispute Resolution Faculty.

  4. Valuation Faculty.

Huw commenced his professional career in 1975 in The Valuation Office of The Inland Revenue.

 

In 1984 he joined the private practice of Smith & Sons where he was initially a Senior Surveyor and then Associate Partner.

 

In 1988 he joined  H H & J Robinson which was bought out by The Halifax Building Society and became Colleys.  He was Local Manager and responsible for opening a new office and personally inspecting and valuing approximately one thousand properties per annum (this was at the height of a property boom).

 

 1990 to date, He have been a Joint Senior Partner of Byrom & Thomas, Chartered Surveyors.

 

A Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Registered Valuer and Business Valuer.

 

Has have carried out inspections to thousands of properties over the years, the majority being in respect of Merseyside properties. 

 

Over the years Huw has built up something of a speciality in providing Development Appraisal Reports, particularly for Lending Institutions.  These have involved valuing of an existing building or development land, providing indicative advice as to the end value of the project, plus reporting of the cost of the project together with likely time scales.  These projects have ranged from simple, small, one plot residential developments up to multi-million pound, mixed commercial and residential projects.

Les Byrom

Les Byrom commenced his professional practice with the Valuation Office of the Inland Revenue in 1974. With the Valuation Office, he studied for the examinations of theRoyal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, studying with an externalcourse at the University of Reading, College of Estate Management, which is a nationally recognised centre for the landed profession.

 

 

In 1980 he qualified as a Chartered Surveyor with the designation ARICS and in 1990 became a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors with the designation FRICS.

 

In 1982 he joined the long established firm of HH & J Robinson, Liverpool as a valuation surveyor and in 1984 became an Associate Partner.

 

In 1987 HH & J Robinson was acquired by the Halifax Building Society and a separate valuation division was established named Colleys.   In 1988 Les Byrom became Regional Executive in charge of Colleys for Merseyside with the responsibility for the valuation of all classes of properties.

 

In 1991, he established a private practice under the style Byrom & Thomas with partner D. Huw Thomas B.Sc FRICS, FBEng, MEWI, establishing offices in Southport, Birkenhead and Liverpool.

 

Byrom & Thomas are a general practice covering all of the Merseyside and greater areas, valuing all classes of property including domestic, retail industrial, commercial, a specialism in care home property, dispute resolution, advocacy, expert witness, planning, boundary disputes, taxation issues, property planning and advice.

 

In his private life, in 1985 Les Byrom was elected as a Councillor on Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council, representing Southport and served on the Social Services and Policy Committee amongst others.

 

This connection with social services and property, following closely on the Registered Homes Act 1984 which saw a large increase in the development of nursing homes, hence the specialisation in this area.

 

Les ran for Parliament for the Knowsley South Constituency in 1991 and the Wirral South constituency in 1997. He was also a European Candidate in 1999 and 2004.

 

Les Byrom has served as the National Chairman of the UK Fire Service (Fire Forum, FSMC and NJC);  Chairman of the Property advisory Committee NW Reserve Forces and Cadets assn., Vice Chairman Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust, Non Executive Director Merseycare NHS Trust, Group Leader NW Regional Assembly. Director of Fire Buy Ltd, Member of the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Authority, County Commander of St John Ambulance Brigade, St John Priory Chapter Member.

 

He was a member of the World Audit Committee of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

 

With a background in the Valuation Office and with top level experience in public life, he has experience of valuing most types of commercial property and dealing with compulsory purchase, planning and related professional advice with HH&J Robinson, Halifax property services and in private practice since.

 

In the 2007 Birthday Honours List, the Queen made Les Byrom a Commander of the Most excellent order of the British Empire (CBE) for service as the National Chairman of the Fire service.
